Description
"Lost At Sea" three words that can evoke many emotions chief among them are fear and sadness. Images of fishing boats from along the Atlantic Coast come to mind as this is where legendary tales have been born from Moby Dick to the more recent Perfect Storm. Men who have gone out to sea never to return are not forgotten for you will see memorials and testament throughout New England even the "Widows Peak" an architectural accent is direct descendant of these tragedies.
Since 70 % of the Earths surface is covered by oceans it is easy to understand their importance to us whether it be for food, transport or pleasure. But the risk is huge as well. Over the ages men and boats have disappeared in numbers to many to count. Whether that happened as a result of storms, accidents, wars, miscalculations of current or bearings all contributed their unfair share.
Perhaps what appeals to us is the mystery of the event where no one is left to explain or bear witness. Famous cases abound in history from "The Bermuda Triangle" to "The Mary Celeste" and "The USS Cyclops". Every year you hear tales of ghost ships appearing to other vessels sailing on the seas and every now and then one is found upright, abandoned.
As technology advances shipwrecks are discovered every year from Roman galleons to WW11 Losses. Who knows what will be discovered next or for that matter what will be lost next
