Description
"And They're Off" with those words the adrenalin starts pumping as horse, man and cart try to be the first to cross the finish line. The horse is what is known as a "Standardbred" not to be confused with a Thoroughbred.
Standardbred horses have shorter legs and longer bodies. The standardbred horse has to trot or pace within a given distance (one mile). Most races are won with a time under 2 minutes..
Drivers have many skills and are at risk despite those skills. If horses bump the cart or sulky as it is known they can find themselves on the ground in a very precarious position.
There is no uniform per se but drivers are known by their colors or silks.
In racing, some of these highly recognizable silks endure. The black-and-cherry-red colors of the Phipps family are eye-catching because of their simplicity. Secretariat could be spotted in a race for two reasons: his brilliance and the matching blue-and-white checkerboards on the blinkers and Ron Turcotte’s silks. On the other hand, relatively new stables on the block also can be inescapable. When a horseplayer sees a horse in a post parade with a jockey who appears to have Superman’s insignia on his outfit, he is sure to remember that stable next time.
Harness racing is a worldwide sport with different rules, regulations and even different breeds of horse.
Here in North America races will be found at established race tracks like the Meadowlands in New York or at state and county fairs throughout the country and Canada.

This photo will look great on many of the items offered here for the race fan in the family.
