Description
This photo was taken while in Florence South Carolina. The home is an example of antebellum architecture which came to be mainly, from the influence of British citizens moving into the deep south. Homes were characterized by the styles associated with Georgian, Greek Revival and Neo classical architecture. This took place before the Civil War. The word antebellum means just that, before war.
Many of these plantation homes featured some sort of grand outdoor entrance leading to front door of home. Oak trees as well as moss covered trees were popular for this purpose. Here, this home had very large hedges leading the way.
On other side of them were cotton fields, reminders of a bygone era. Florence is only about 65 miles from the coast and most of the plantations in Florence County grew cotton.
