While travelling in Alaska we were in Homer Spit and took a day trip to Seldovia an island in Lower Cook Inlet. Along the way we passed this rocky formation known as Gull Island. In this safe bird sanctuary are several species of birds that during the summer months build nests, and chicks out. Among the species are Pelagic Comorants, Red faced Comorants, Horned Puffins, Black Winged Kittiwake, Common Mure, Glaucous-Winged Gulls, Tufted Puffins, Pigeon Gillemot. As many as 20,000 seabirds build nests here with hundreds of seagulls among them. This is the most visited seabird rookery in the bay. Owned by the Seldovia Native Association. Public is not allowed on shore. The Pratt Museum does have a camera on site that provides a live feed. Even though you do not go ashore you do get close enough to be overwhelmed by the sound of so many birds in one place, the island itself is to me a kind of magical, mystical place. My body of work ranges from photographic digital art to the more traditional use of a camera photographing scenes of landscapes and everyday life. My photography has its roots going back to my experiences with infrared film. It was there that I saw how an image could be manipulated to something much more different than what was first seen. I still compose some photos from the infrared spectrum only now I use a camera converted to IR. When digital came along it was an easy move to software and all the possibilities that were and are now possible with their use.
