Description
No description of Iceland would be complete without mention of the horses. As many horses as their are sheep. There are cattle to be sure but are vastly outnumbered. The Icelandic horse is the pride of this Nordic country. Some consider them to be the most beautiful of horses worldwide. They are especially known for their tolt. Unlike most other horses which have a walk, trot, canter and run Icelandic horses have what is referred to as a 5th gear.
These horses are hardy, durable and have a thick fur, perfect for this European country's climate. Iceland would not be what it is today without them. When first arriving here centuries ago they helped with sheep herding, collecting hay and transportation, there were no roads until the first was built in 1870.
Icelandic law does not allow horses from other countries into theirs and if a horse competes out of Iceland it must be sold at auction after the event since they are not allowed back into Iceland. These facts may be a reason why there are so few of them affected by disease.
More of my photography from this beautiful country can be seen by following this link to my Iceland collection here in FAA

Ciao Jim, Yes, you can use them: it's my pleasure: let me know where they (photo and thoughts) will be, if you like it, so I could visit and promote again your picture. Have a good day. / Buona giornata Claudio
Jim Cook replied:
I will. I'm travelling for next few days, so after this trip I will let you know! Thank you!

This picture looks like a powerful suggestion to manage the wild, but it is not right: a gate cannot stop the sirocco wind, a strong horse is not afraid by a little fence. We have to caress the horse, we have to accept the rain. That's the hidden message of this picture. L/F/Tw
