Description
This historic lighthouse located at 2 East Gulf Beach Drive, St. George Island, FL 32328 is another historic lighthouse that did Not survive hurricanes! In fact it has been constructed and reconstructed three different times and at different locations. First built in 1833 on the western tip of the island, at the Gulf’s channel toward the port of Apalachicola. Because ships approaching from the East couldn’t easily see the beacon and after much damage from storms it was decided in 1846 to rebuild it on the southernmost point. By 1848 it was rebuilt using much of the original materials from its predecessor. Doomed it seems it only lasted till it was completely destroyed three years later by another hurricane. Two other lighthouses met with a similar fate. Rebuilt in 1852 further inland and constructed much like the Titanic to be indestructible it lasted until Oct 21st 2005 when due to constant erosion and hurricanes it sank into the Gulf of Mexico. Over the intervening years many attempts had been made, futilely to save it from this fate but all failed even last ditch efforts by the “Save The Light Campaign” which declared the lighthouse saved in 2002. With the help of The St. George Lighthouse Association, established in 2004 to "rescue the light", and the State of Florida DEP they were able to salvage the pieces of the fallen light. Volunteers aided in cleaning these pieces and the lighthouse was once again rebuilt in the center of the island and opened to the public in 2008 and will stand there until……..?
