Description
Through closed no longer ample open doors stands just a farmer gazing on dim lit fields where horse and cattle no longer feed. He waits as the cold blue haze comes to carry him away. Away from his horizon away from the USA.
With profuse apologies to Walt Whitman my photo eulogizes the passing of a way of life that has sustained this country and countless generations of farmers.Right or wrong sad or not the family farm is being replaced by large corporations that are doing the same work but with far fewer farmhands. In 1862 Abraham Lincoln created the U.S Department of Agriculture. At that time 90 out of every 100 Americans were farmers, today there are just 2 out of 100. At the time of the USDA creation their motto was "Agriculture is the foundation of manufacture and commerce" In a weird turn around it can probably be said that manufacture and commerce are now the foundation of agriculture. Inventions and innovation in machinery, techniques, and distribution have helped this come about.
This photograph was produced in camera by using the image overlay function from the menu. I selected two photos and combined them then did some very minor post processing in Photo Shop Elements 7. Love your concept and theme here so much...I actually spend a little extra to buy our milk from a local dairy here in Ohio....The cows actually graze out in fields eating grass! The milk is delicious! I hope the small farms somehow pull through for years to come!...fav/v54

Jim, Beautifully done love the way you have positioned the farmer looking at what was and will never be again for him. The feel of a gothic tale in your write up in the description box gives the sense of ghosts and souls that cannot leave their once proud land. Remarkably processed and with great details and colors. Excellent photo, voted, and google promoted
