Description
Notwithstanding that its a weird friendship, maybe I should have titled this Why Can't We Be Friends. Alligators and turtles do get along. While the alligator and turtle may not truly be friends, for a little while anyway they co-exist. Both sharing the remains of a capsized boat and not fearful or mindful of the other. Alligators will eat turtles, but they are not a preferred menu item. As long as there is a reliable food source the gator will wait for its food to come to it and the turtle remains safe.
There is also a phenomenon in nature where one organism will use the other for transportation. So, it is a common sight to see turtles riding on the backs of alligators.
Photo was snapped while kayaking on the Silver River in the Silver Springs State Park in Ocala Florida.
