Description
The Lorraine Motel infamous because of it being the site where Martin Luther King was assassinated was owned by Walter and Loree Bailey a white couple who had no problem renting rooms to blacks or whites regardless of the South's Jim Crow Laws. Many notable African Americans were guests here including Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes. Sports teams including the Harlem Globetrotters and baseballs Negro leagues would stay as guests of the then upscale motel. The motel was listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book that listed establishments in the south that were friendly to African Americans in spite of Jim Crow Laws.
None of those guests though equaled the stature of Mr. King. Already a world leader and in this country known for his support and organization of protest movements. He was in Memphis Tennessee specifically to support the sanitation workers who were striking for better pay and fair treatment. Their chant has become iconic "I Am A Man" and is memorialized on a wall that is nearby the motel which is now The National Civil Rights Museum.
Dr King the youngest man to ever win the Nobel Prize was assassinated on the motel balcony April 04th 1968. His death as untimely and ugly as it was may have changed the nation in ways still being determined. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's Dream lives on.
Available as a rolled print, poster, framed fine art print, metal, acrylic, wood or canvas print. Framed and canvas prints for your home, restaurant, hotel, bed and breakfast, office, waiting room, etc.
