Description
On a recent trip to Alaska we took a day trip to Seldovia an island that was once the fishing capital of the world. Along the way is Gull Island about twenty minutes from Homer Spit where we departed from. Gull Island is a huge rock with craggy faces and cliffs. In this safe bird sanctuary are several species of birds that during the summer months build nests, and chicks out. Among the species are Pelagic Comorants,Red faced Comorants, Horned Puffins, Black Winged Kittiwake, Common Mure, Glaucous-Winged Gulls, Tufted Puffins, PigeonGillemot. As many as 20,000 seabirds build nests here with hundreds of seagulls among them. This is the most visited seabird rookery in the bay. Owned by the Seldovia Native Association. Public is not allowed on shore. The Pratt Museum does have a camera on site that provides a live feed. Even though you do not go ashore you do get close enough to be overwhelmed by the sound of so many birds in one place, the island itself is to me a kind of magical, mystical place. If travelling to this part of Alaska (Kenai Peninsula) and Homer in particular you will be treated to post card views of snow capped mountains, four active volcanoes, and the gigantic Harding icefield.Rivers teem with spawning salmon.Bears, eagles, moose are in abundance. Homer itself offers premier fishing for halibut, salmon, and lingcod. Homer is also home port for F/V Time Bandit of the popular television show Alaska Deadliest Catch"
