Description
This photo was made while on a photo shoot in the Pinelands of New Jersey. One of the characteristics of infrared photography is how ordinary scenes are transformed from what is seen to what is unseen.
The title Jersey Devil comes from a myth or legend that originated in Southern New Jersey during the Colonial time period. The monster story has survived to this day with groups of people who go into the swamps, bogs and forest in search of the creature.
This may be a result of how fear perpetuated the legend. During the early weeks of 1909 newspapers published hundreds of stories purporting to sightings and attacks by the Devil. Panic was very real with police departments in two communities claiming to have fired on the creature with no effect. The Philadelphia Zoo offered a $10,000 reward for its capture.
Whether real or not, the Devil is this country's only State Demon.
Don't let this scary story keep you from visiting the Pinelands. Its beauty and importance to a great portion of the East Coast is well worth the visit. My collection of images from this part of New Jersey can be seen if visiting https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/1-jim-cook.html?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=757770
