Description

The scene portrayed here is from Rhyolite Nevada a ghost town located just outside of Death Valley National Park. The sculptures were created by a group of artists from Belgium seeking to work in a secluded place free from the restraints of European society. They were led by Albert Szukalski . Rhyolite came into existence when a couple of miners found gold and the town boomed to a population high of 10,000 in the sweltering heat of the Mojave Desert. When gold did not pan out for the fortune seekers the town eventually became what it is today a collection of buildings slowly disappearing with only a semblance of what they once were. The ghostly sculptures pictured are part of a re-creation of "The Last Supper" Nearby is the Red Barn Art Center where new artist residency and artist workspace programs are offered.
