Description
I arrived before dawn to mile marker 304.6 just as the sun began lighting up the area and the viaduct.. The Linn Cove Viaduct is 1,243 feet long and contains 153 segments weighing 50 tons each. Only one segment, the southernmost is straight. It is an astonishing architectural feat that meanders gently upward in an S curve towards the sky. It was built in a manner that would not harm one of the worlds oldest mountains. After 52 years of construction, the Blue Ridge Parkway was completed in September 1987.Ground was broken on September 11, 1935 at Cumberland Knob, North Carolina, and was completed in September 1987. At least 20 years can be attributed to the concern and controversy and ultimately the painstaking methods that were utilized to bring this beautiful vision to fruition.
