Description
The Narrows is possibly the most popular hiking trail for people who have made Zion National Park a must see destination. Hiking in the canyon can be done in many ways from hiking to a campground or simply wading through the water for as long as you care to. The Virgin River will be 20 to 30 feet wide in places. Sometimes as seen in this photo you will have water and or rocky terrain to navigate. At still other places you will be hugging the canyon walls to avoid deeper water drop offs. It is all worth it as around every bend is an inviting scene from 1000 foot cliffs to small cave like hollows. Depending on time of year water may be cold and if there has been recent rain it can be dangerous. Sadly people have lost their lives due to flash floods that occur. The water simply has no place to go and because the canyon is narrow water rises leaving people with no place to hide or escape. You have to pay attention to the weather forecast for your area as well as to the north. There are outfitters that can provide you with the proper equipment, meaning shoes, waterproof pants etc even walking sticks which are advisable. I carried items in a dry bag, food, water some camera gear and one camera around my neck. More of my photos from Zion and Bryce can be viewed in my collections here in FAA.
