Description
In our back yard, here in Northeast Tennessee there is one large dead tree and another with a couple of dead limbs. This dead wood is a favorite of the Pileated Woodpecker (dryocopus pileatus). Carpenter ants are a favorite in their diet. They will strip bark and drill deep into the wood in search of them. They are solitary though can be found in pairs when breeding. They are monogamous. They do not migrate and only move to new location if fallen or dead trees are removed from their area. They are rare enough that you wont easily spot them. Really the only reason we spotted this one was because of the noise it made while pecking at wood.
