Description
This photograph was taken at Cadillac Mountain on Mt Desert Island within Acadia National Park. At 1532 ft the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard it is the first place in the U.S to view sunrise from October through March. This particular morning while I wasn't up early enough to catch the sunrise it was early enough to take advantage of the light and highlight some of the vegetation that has taken root alongside of the mountain. The mountain is mostly composed of pink granite and forests of spruce and pitch pine. The route to the top has many pull offs to leave a vehicle and go explore. Cycling is very popular here as well as hiking. There are several trails to the top ranging in difficulty from challenging to easy but full day required South trail being the easier one. The park loop road is 3.5 miles to the top and is winding and scenic so scenic that you have to be concerned with safety as you have cliffs on the side and the scenes and vistas can easily distract. Once there you will have a spectacular panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Bar Harbor, Porcupine Islands and ships and boats large and small. On a clear day Mount Katahdin the highest mountain in Maine is visible as will be the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
