Artist's Description

The Santa Elena Canyon Trail is an iconic hike within the Big Bend National Park. Trail starts at canyon opening near a sandy beach. Concrete steps lead upward, in switchbacks, offering some breathtaking views. At end of the concrete steps, you begin a downward hike to the river.
Once you reach the shore, you could throw a stone across the Rio Grande River and hit the limestone cliffs on the Mexican side.
I was here in late March and was able to walk through the river, even as kayaks and canoes made there way through it. Other times of the year, the trail may be closed due to flooding.
It is a hike that by most descriptions is considered to be an easy 1.6 mile out and back trail.
