Description
Scranton PA is known for many things. Once upon a time in its heyday, vaudevillians of all sorts made Scranton a must play destination. Immigrants made it their home obtaining jobs in the mines and railroad. Today it is also known as the home of that scrappy kid Joe Biden former Vice President and now President. Perhaps in the eye of history and cultural relevance architecture should not be ignored. The city has many architectural wonders that showcase many styles.
The George P Abdalla building located in downtown Scranton was constructed in the years of 1891 to 1893. Architect was the Wilson Brothers. The land itself predates the building as far back as 1866. It changed hands before eventually being sold to the Central RR of New Jersey.
When station was in full use it was a catapult for the growth and expansion of Scranton Pennsylvania transporting anthracite coal to markets and passengers to Allentown, Philadelphia PA, as well as Washington DC.
Its distinctive style is attributed to the architect Henry Hobson Richardson. He was influenced by ancient Romans architecture 1066 to 1200.
