Artist's Description
For the first time ever the young lady successfully skims a stone across the water as family watches. No matter what age you are you have probably passed some time away idly throwing a flattened, smooth stone to see how many times you could make it bounce before sinking to the bottom.
What makes a stone skip is referred to as the "Magic Angle" 20 degrees to be precise. Most throwers will use a sidearm toss and flick of the wrist. Spin, shape and speed also contribute but the angle is what's most important.
Jerdone Coleman McGhee once held the Guinness World Record for stone skipping: 38 bounces, filmed on the Blanco River in Texas in 1992.That record has been shattered several times since then and is currently 88 skips by Kurt "Mountain Man" Steiner, age 48. The cast was achieved on September 06, 2013
Stone skipping knows no boundaries as it's referred to in other countries as "Ricochet" or Ducks and Drakes, Baking Pancakes or Little Frogs.
About Jim Cook
My body of work ranges from photographic digital art to the more traditional use of a camera photographing scenes of landscapes and everyday life. My photography has its roots going back to my experiences with infrared film. It was there that I saw how an image could be manipulated to something much more different than what was first seen. I still compose some photos from the infrared spectrum only now I use a camera converted to IR. When digital came along it was an easy move to software and all the possibilities that were and are now possible with their use. Still the initial composition in camera is paramount and once the shutter is closed and image transferred to computer, I can turn my imagination loose and enhance or create...
