Description
He was there alone with himself, collected, tranquil, adoring, comparing the serenity of his heart with the serenity of the skies, moved in the darkness by the visible splendors of the constellations, and the invisible splendor of God, opening his soul to the thoughts which fall from the Unknown. In such moments, offering up his heart at the hour when the flowers of night inhale their perfume, lighted like a lamp in the center of the starry night, expanding his soul in ecstasy in the midst of the universal radiance of creation, he could not himself perhaps have told what was passing in his own mind; he felt something depart from him, and something descend upon him, mysterious interchanges of the depths of the soul with the depths of the universe.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
In my mind I felt that the words above, fit my photo perfectly.
All through the ages we have been gazing upward towards this silvery orb in the nighttime sky. It has fueled the imaginations of poets like Emily Dickinson who wrote The Moon, song writers, too many to just single out one, but they have ranged from silly, to romantic and those that remind us of home. Science fiction writers such as the great Jules Verne who penned From the Earth to the Moon. Playwrights no less than William Shakespeare who used the moon to mark the passage of time in his Midsummer Nights Dream
Study of the moon began perhaps in mystery and even fear as prehistoric man tried to make sense of his surroundings. In time Greek philosophers began to answer mysteries that Earth and the Universe presented in their natural phenomena. Anaxagoras was first to explain that the moon shines by reflecting light from the sun. These early Natural Philosophers led the way for those of similar mind to be called scientists from 19th century to present day.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.

Jim, stunning scene and powerful message. Love the black & white. Would make a great cover for a mystery novel or deep thought-provoking book. Beautifully composed. Great leading lines. l/v/fave/tweeted
