Description
2nd oldest lighthouse in Florida built around 1832 to aid in navigating the treacherous shallow water and shoals of the St Mark River. It has survived war and hurricanes. At outset of Civil War the Confederacy used it as a lookout and as a base of operations. Subsequently it became the site of the South's last meaningful victory and is known as the Battle of Natural Bridge.
Today it is known as a destination for visitors interested in its history as well as the beautiful scenes that abound. Near the town of Crawfordville Florida you take the 10 to 12 mile Lighthouse road through some amazing views. While I was there just recently as September ends I witnessed the beginning of the annual Monarch Butterfly Migration which starts here as they make their way over the Gulf of Mexico.
