Description
Zion National Park is threatened by Bureau of Land Management’s desire to sell rights to drill for oil and gas within 1 mile of this national landmark. The park already facing major concerns because of the area being a worldwide destination for tourists. The vehicular traffic that is associated from tourism is straining the park and neighboring towns like Springdale Utah. The last time I was there in 2016 I was disheartened to learn that a lottery may be in the future to limit visitors. Add to the existing situation more traffic that will result from fracking and drilling and you can be sure that the traffic congestion will only worsen and that scenic vistas will be degraded, as well as the night sky that is relatively unspoiled by outside light sources. Fracking in Utah and other states have been linked to earthquakes. Contamination of water is another worry for residents and business owners. The proposal by BLM is in this writers opinion shortsighted as to the long term effects to this National Treasure and shameful in its abandonment of what is in the best interest of all.
A petition asking the BLM not to put the parcels up for auction can be found at this page
