Todays portraits can trace their roots all the way back to the dawn of man when we first began drawing them on the walls of caves. Further samples of portrait genre are the sculpted portraits from ancient Egypt. Next, during the age of antiquity, portraiture reached its heyday The term Age of Antiquity is most often used when referring to the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. From the beginning portraits not only described physical features but even more importantly power and status. There was a decline through the Middle ages but the Renaissance saw a resurgence and reinvention that became a turning point in the history of portraiture. From that point in time to present day the field of portraiture has traveled many roads. At one time portraits tended to be only of the royals, nobles and religious figures but soon came to include the bourgeoisie and often as not the immediate circle of artists and even nameless models.
Within 03 months of the cameras invention (1839) the first portrait was taken then within a year�s time photo studios opened and offered affordable portraits that previously only the wealthy could afford. Some photographers � including Robert Adamson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar the Younger and Antoine Samuel Adam- Salomon � had artistic ambitions. They went beyond a mere likeness through pose, composition, dramatic lighting and the attempt to depict the soul.
