Description
Big Horn Sheep did not survive in this area and had to be reintroduced to the park in the early 70's. A small number of them less than 15 increased the population to well over 400 or so. Today as you drive along the mountain road you may spot them making their way along side the mountain ridges or up high on ridges. As a general rule it is not a common sight to see so many in one group as this. Desert Big Horn Sheep are a different breed than their Rocky Mountain neighbors. Their legs are longer and bodies smaller but can subsist on lesser amounts of water. Several reasons contributed to their demise the first time around. Human encroachment, hunting, loss of habitat, and after coming into contact with domesticated livestock disease as much as the above factors also doomed them. Todays population is worrisome in that disease outbreaks could reoccur from same contact. Hunting is no longer a problem as they are protected within the park. For your information if planning a trip the best viewpoint for the Big Horn Sheep is Eastern side of park where mountains and cliffs give you best chance to see them.
