Description
One of Scranton's and indeed, Northeastern Pennsylvania's sights to see is the Everhart Museum located in Nay Aug Park in the city's Hill Section. The museum was funded by philanthropist and Civil War veteran Dr. Isiaha Fawkes Everhart. . After the war and a tour of Europe he made Scranton his home. Besides his medical career, which continued in Scranton, he was an avid naturalist. As an expert taxidermist he compiled an extensive collection of birds and animals which he had collected and preserved. In 1907 he promised the city of Scranton a natural history museum. May 30th, 1908, it was opened to the public.
A bronze sculpture of Dr. Everhart at museum entrance was dedicated on May 20, 1911. Dr. Everhart died 5 days later on May 25, 2011.
