Description
After setting camp and having supper then enjoying a campfire I went to bed and awoke at 3 AM to drive to the launch site. Almost an hour later 30 or more photographers boarded a ferry which took us to a drop off site where we hoisted ourselves onto trailers which towed us to the beach. We were there an hour before sunrise and had plenty of time to search out a good spot. Bulls island is part of the Cape Romaine National Wildlife Refuge. No one is allowed to camp overnight on the island thus sunrise is kind of a rare event for many. These sunrise photography expeditions are timed to coincide with low tide. The refuge itself encompasses about 66000 acres. Aside from the sunrise the island is a mecca for birders, wildlife enthusiasts and just beachcombing enthusiasts looking for shells and sand dollars that you wont find washed up on most tourist beaches. The trip was very well organized by "Coastal Expeditions" from Charleston South Carolina. The different employees we encountered were all friendly and knowledgeable about the area and eager to share their information. Although this excellent art-image is of a thriving wildlife refuge, to me, it could also be seen as a picture, a warning, of a future were no more trees can grow. . .
