All across America and indeed throughout the world this is a very common sight. The chimney provides ventilation to disperse hot flue gas or smoke to the outside atmosphere. Depending on what kinds of gases or particulates are being emitted determines how tall a stack should be so that it minimizes or eliminates what will reach ground level. Industrial chimneys are called flue gas stacks and are an external construction rather than being built inside of a structure like residential homes.
