Description
This stone sculpture sits at edge of pond and butterfly garden. Located in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans Louisiana. One of New Orleans largest and said to be most historic it is located in the city limits of New Orleans and not in the nearby town of Metairie which confuses many people. Myself included.
The cemetery was once a race track and a rich man from Baltimore who was denied membership in the Jockey Club vowed to turn the track into a cemetery. After the Civil War he made good on the threat.
Sections of land were sold to the wealthy who built some very expensive tombs and the area soon became known as "Millionaires Row". Over time smaller parcels were sold to the less fortunate. Some immigrants pooled their resources forming benevolent mausoleums. Civil war veterans also have a very large area for its men who fought in so many of the wars horrendous battles.
My reason for visiting the cemetery was in order to view and photograph the "Weeping Angel" which is a copy of the sculpture called "Angel of Grief". Chapman H. Hyam had this mausoleum built to house his families remains. This replica of "The Angel of Grief" is perhaps the most photographed statue in the world. Blue stained glass covers the marble statue in soft blue light. At its base is the inscription "Sister" meant to honor his sisters. The interior is closed to the public and is only opened a few times during the year for maintenance. This photo was shot from the outside looking in.
More of my work can be seen in my collection here in FAA titled "Cemeteries and Statues"
