Description
If visiting Roan Mountain State Park be sure to stop at the visitor center. The water wheel is easily visible from the highway. The parking lot is above the bank of the Doe River. A foot bridge will take you across the river for a close-up look to the wheel. Just beyond is an historical marker and visitor center.
From the visitor center walk between the water wheel building and the bathrooms then bear left and go beneath the waterwheel flume and start your hike to the Peg Leg iron ore mine.
Water wheels like this one were connected to a 500-pound hammer. It would be lifted up a few feet, tripped, then crashed onto the ore below.
Ore was then melted in a nearby smelter, shipped to North Carolina to be further processed and ultimately sent to steel mills in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
A trip back in time made all the more enjoyable while surrounded by natures beauty.
