Description
Built in 1793, a community was formed in Bradford County, Pennsylvania for French refugees fleeing the French Revolution and slave uprisings in Saint-Domingue. It also included a grand mansion that supposedly was meant as refuge for Marie Antoinette but there are no records to support her ever having visited or stayed there prior to her execution. Little remains today, but at one time the settlement consisted of town square, shops, a chapel, and a distillery. The community came to be known as French Azilum.
