Description
The title It Was "Then That I Carried You" was taken from the poem "Footprints in the Sand" written by American Author Carolyn Joyce Carty while still at a very young age.
A 14-foot statue was sculpted by Carthage Texas artist Bob Harness who was inspired by the poem after reading it while at a funeral.
The poems narrator questions why when at his lowest were there only one set of footprints, and Jesus replied it was then that I carried you.
Money and volunteer labor brought the memorial park to fruition nearly 6 years later.
The setting is serene and peaceful. Large footprints lead from the parking lot to the statue. Benches and memorial plaques are there to simply rest or pray.
One of the earliest donors had his likeness sculpted as the old man being carried by Jesus. His name is Willie George.
The memorial park and bronze sculpture are located at the southwest edge of the city on Dixie Lake Rd, Carthage, TX. Admission is free.
