Description
Working grist mill in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These mills from Colonial times were built near fast moving streams or rivers which provided the power to turn the large wooden wheels, gears and millstones that would grind corn into flour, grits and cornmeal.
This mill near Gatlinburg Tennessee was constructed in the early 1870's by John Cable and was one of four mills that the residents of Cades Cove relied upon until modernization of technology and changing health standards brought about their demise.
