Description
Because of the rocky coastline and the danger it presented to marine traffic. Citizens of the area who depended on their trade petitioned the U. S. Government to build a Lighthouse. In 1874 President Rutherford B Hayes approved the sum of $15000.00. to build one. Construction was completed July 01st 1879.
The lighthouse went by the names of Knubble Lighthouse with a 4th order light. Then in 1939 the Coast Guard was given responsibility for the lighthouse and surrounding buildings and renamed the historic structure the official name of Cape Neddick Lightstation. Finally in July 1987 the U.S. Government and the town of York signed a lease ensuring the property would be maintained and cared for. In 1997 Senator Olympia Snow announced that the town of York was and will continue to be permanent guardian for Nubble Lighthouse.
