Description
A statue of Buddha or the Enlightened One sits atop a Chinese Garden and lagoon on Avery Island Louisiana. This garden is just one of several known as the Jungle Gardens. This sanctuary was created by Edward Mcllhenny who was a very conservation minded individual who imported plants and flowers from around the world.
The statue itself is over 900 years old and was created for the Shonfa Temple. It was given as a gift to Mr. Mcllhenny by friends who found it stored in a warehouse in New York City.
Today the island and the manufacture of Tabasco sauce is still run by his descendants.
Perhaps the most popular point of interest for visitors to the island and also to local Buddhists who observe a number of ceremonies throughout the year including Buddha's birthday.
