Description
While hiking in the Garden of The Gods I came upon this view which was visible from a scenic pulloff for people travelling through the park in vehicles. I had to wait out a number of tourists who were all intent on using these stone formations as a backdrop for the family vacation album. Can't say that I blame them either. Eventually my patience won out and I was able to get this shot. These slabs, buttresses and cliffs seemingly go on forever. Indeed throughout the area are strange and incredible rock formations that invite your imagination to wonder how they were formed and to what purpose. At times the park feels mystical and still other moments you have the feeling that perhaps something with a sense of humor created these whimisical structures. How else do you explain the Kissing Camels or Balancing Rock? A massive boulder that sits precariously upon another smaller boulder defying it seems, gravity.
These red rock formations are located and owned by Colorado Springs and is considered to be a city park free and open to the public. 480 acres were eventually turned over to the city by Mr Charles Perkins and his children with the stipulation that it be free to the world. That 480 acres is now a part of 1367 acres. It attracts a large number of visitors particularly on the weekends so it might be advisable to plan a weekday visit. Besides tourists, this area is well known and visited for it's rock clinbing which provides varied challenges to those so inclined. The rock walls are often seen with climbers making their way up alongside the many raptors that make their home here.
