Description
Captain Thomas Amis was a fascinating character in his day. When he eventually settled in what was then a part of North Carolina, but today is East Tennessee, he built a fortified home with gun ports instead of windows on the upper half of home because of Indian raids. Now over 200 years old the home still stands Prior to then he had served prominently during the Revolutionary War as a member of the Continental Army. After the war he was a marked man by the British, and so was granted a 1000 acres of land near, what is now Rogersville TN. He became a very successful business man, putting the land and water to good use. Built a tavern and Grist Mill, and was a stopover for pioneers. Today the grounds are used for special events and the Amis Eatery is open to all. The land and buildings were purchased and maintained by his descendants. He is buried in the family cemetery with 2 of his wives buried nearby. The large headstone paraphrases the poem "Don't Weep At My Grave" the smaller stone reads "He Made Dying Seem So Early But We Know That Isnt So, He Was Just A Silent Hero With No Place Left to Go".
