Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania known to many as Switzerland of America is also considered to be the Gateway to the Poconos. It is situated short distances away from Philadelphia or New York City. The Lehigh River beckons river enthusiasts who will hop in rafts for some white water fun as well as kayakers. Alongside the river is a marvelous bike path. You can hop on board a train in the historic station downtown and it will drop you off in White Haven PA 25 miles or so from Jim Thorpe. Slight down hill grade makes the day and exercise even more enjoyable. Once back in town enjoy the many shops and restaurants or visit the Asa Packer Mansion or even the Haunted Jail. In 1954 the towns of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk united to form Jim Thorpe borough to honor the "Worlds Greatest Athlete" Jim Thorpe the first Native American to win Gold in the Olympics.
